Spring cannot come too soon here in cold southern Idaho! It's still snowing and dropping below freezing at night. But the longer days give me hope that milder weather is just around the corner. It's time to start spring cleaning our 5th wheel's interior in preparation for sunny days and open windows.
Dust from Top to Bottom
Our trailer lets a lot of dust through gaps & cracks when we have a windy day. So my first cleaning task is to get out the extendable duster and dust from top to bottom, paying special attention to any ledges and crevices. Cleaning from top to bottom means the dust falls down to lower surfaces and when we clean the furniture and floors, all of the dust will get picked up.
Clean the air conditioner
Another job high up on the list is to clean the air conditioner grill and filter in the ceiling. Check with your owner's manual to find instructions on how your model works. The dirt and dust builds up so fast once the air conditioner is running all day, every day! You'll want to clean the outside, as well, but we will save that for another article.
Cleaning the upholstered furniture & rugs
Use a carpet cleaning machine with attachments, a portable cleaning machine, or spray upholstery cleaner to make it look and smell like new again. Be careful if you have faux leather or leather furniture as those surfaces need specialty cleaners.
We have a lot of pet hair in the carpet and vacuuming doesn't get it all up. Look for a pet hair squeegee or rubber broom to get it out of the rug fibers. This especially helps with the corners and crevices. If we've used a carpet cleaning machine to clean the upholstery, now is the time to shampoo the carpets. Remember to limit how much you wet the carpet with the cleaning solution, and make many passes over the wet carpet to remove as much water as possible, to avoid damaging your subfloor surface.
Pack away winter gear
As soon as the weather is warm enough, pack up your winter gear to swap out for spring & summer clothes, shoes, and jackets. The space saving bags that vacuum out the excess air are great for keeping your off-season clothes clean and free of pests. Just be sure they are clean and dry before sealing them up.
Hopefully this article gives you a quick list of how to get started with your spring cleaning for your RV. Freshening up your RV interior gives you an emotional boost and is a great way to start off your spring adventures!
